Carmelite History

Foundation and Devotion

The Carmelite Order, one of Christianity's age-old monastic orders, traces its origins back to the late 11th century. It began with devout Christian laity undertaking a pilgrimage to Palestine to honor the sites associated with Jesus Christ's life. Deeply moved by His death and resurrection, they renounced married life and embraced poverty within a community of monks dedicated to prayer and fulfilling God's will.

Inspiration from Prophet Elijah

Inspired by the Prophet Elijah, they lived as hermits in the caves of Mt. Carmel before migrating to Europe to spread the Gospel message of holiness. They emphasized liberation from material attachments and enslavements, advocating for a life centered on faith and openness to God.

Guidance of Mary and Spiritual Practice

Central to their journey was the guidance of Mary, the mother of Jesus, whom they embraced as their spiritual mother and guide. They adopted the Scapular, a distinctive garment symbolizing her maternal care and the importance of surrendering to God's will.

Legacy and Influence

Their God-centered life, rooted in unconditional love, aimed to enable sincere seekers to live fully balanced and joyful lives. The spiritual heirs of the Carmelite Order, including St. Teresa of Avila, St. John of the Cross, St. Therese of Lisieux, and St. Elizabeth of the Trinity, became renowned teachers and proponents of Christian spirituality, leaving behind profound legacies that continue to inspire seekers worldwide. Some members of the Carmelite Order brought this rich spiritual tradition to the western shores of India, where the CCR congregation inherits it today.
