St Michael' Convent School

History of St. Michael’s Convent School

St. Michael’s Convent School boasts a rich history rooted in the picturesque coastal city of Karwar, Karnataka. During the era of British rule over the Karwar region, the need for quality education for the local Indian youth became apparent. This need coincided with the arrival of European sisters trained in education by Ms. Sophie Leeves, later known as Mother Veronica. Thus, in 1927, the foundation was laid for what would become St. Michael’s School, initially situated on a property housing a cotton ginning factory.

Foundation and Growth

Under the leadership of Sr. M. Aloysia and subsequent superiors, the school began its journey with a small group of dedicated sisters. Temporary accommodations in a wooden bungalow marked the humble beginnings, but with a growing student body and community support, the school soon shifted to its current location, generously gifted by the Archdiocese of Goa.

As per the records, the school was opened on February 1st, 1927, with just 20 pupils in the Infant classes I & II. The local church community and the people of Karwar warmly welcomed the sisters and offered full support and encouragement to provide a better future for their children.

On May 22nd, 1927, the establishment was shifted to the present site, gifted by the Archdiocese of Goa to the sisters in appreciation of their good work for the welfare of the citizens of Karwar. It was on June 6, 1927, that the school was formally opened, with the inauguration of the first academic year. Each succeeding year saw new space created to accommodate a higher level of class.

Milestones and Achievements

Over the years, St. Michael’s Convent School has achieved numerous milestones. From government recognition in 1931 to becoming a recognized high school in 1940, the school has continuously evolved to meet the educational needs of the region. Notably, in 2009, the foundation stone was laid for an English medium primary school, which was inaugurated in 2011.

The school became a recognized high school in 1940, the first high school of the Catholic Church in North Kanara. In 1941, the first batch of students appeared for the Matriculation examination of the Bombay board. In 1944, the Kannada higher primary school run by the parish was entrusted to the sisters.
